Discussion & Debate - Update

When you see racehorses in their stables or in the birdcage at the races, does it look like their are mistreated? The obvious answer is no. Most people think that racehorses have a tragic, cruel life, however, this is untrue. Racehorses do get treated nicely and do have a good life. A racehorses health and condition is top priority at all times. They must be in the best condition in order to complete their races let alone beating others. There are a lot of roles in a racing stable in order to look after the horses properly. To be a trainer you have to be licensed to train racehorses.

My first point that I am going to cover is how carefully they get looked after before races and how fit and healthy they are kept. The trainers make and organise special training plans, diets and therapies with each horse having their own specific plan for their own needs. Before races, trainers need to make sure to not over work their horses as this can lead to problems in the race like dehydration, cramps and strains. They also will make a daily schedule to help calm and train the horse. The schedule usually includes exercises and feeds at certain times to prepare for the day.

The next thing is feeding. Obviously, feeding a racehorse is not as easy as you think. The horses have special diets that help their stamina, muscle building and repair and for energy. It is also not uncommon for racehorses to get stomach ulcers so their feeds consist of high fiber and natural oils.             Once the horse has finished training, the trainer organises hydrotherapy, cold therapy and also sometimes heat therapy. This helps reduce inflammation, helps muscle repair, increasing blood flow to sore areas and stops aches.

After the race the horse will be walked around to cool them off until their body has balanced itself out again. The horse will then get taken to their stall and slowly given water. Too much water straight after a big race can result in colic. The horse can also only have food once they have been cooled done as this also would result in health issues.

Discussion & Debate

This is my first point for my topic 'Should Horse Racing be Allowed?' which I am for. Do you agree or disagree with this topic?

~     ~     ~

My first point is that racehorses are very well cared for. A racehorses health and condition is top priority at all times. They must be in the best condition in order to complete their races let alone beating others. There are a lot of roles in a racing stable in order to look after the horses. To be a trainer you have to be licensed by the state to train racehorses. Trainers make and organise training plans, diets and therapies with each horse having their own specific plan for their own needs. Other roles are grooms, a veterinary team and of course a jockey. Before races trainers need to make sure to not over work their horses as this can lead to problems in the race like dehydration, cramps and strains. They also will make a daily schedule to help calm and train the horse. The schedule usually includes exercises and feeds at certain times to prepare for the day. Poetry

My colour poem without sound

White feels fluffy and wooly like a pony in the winter
White smells fresh, clean and cold like snow clouds
ready to burst
White sounds like snow crunching beneath my feet.

Black feels jagged and rough like the face of a mountain
Black smells like freshly burnt toast
Black sounds like millions of horses stampeding towards you.

Orange is soft and delicate like the middle of a mandarin
Orange smells sour like an unripe orange
Orange sounds like a gentle swish of a goldfish's tail or
the sad crack when you snap a floppy carrot.

My colour Poem and typatone

This is my Colour poem which I then put into typatone to give it some sound. Enjoy!

SLJ Week 4 Day 5 Activity 3

SLJ Week 4 Day 5 Activity 3

I have really enjoyed doing the Summer Learning Journey this year. I think one of my favourite activities would have to be making my Text Graphic because I liked finding a really cool quote and finding a nice picture to match.

I didn't really have a least favourite activity that I did. I enjoyed them all and I am looking forward to the next SLJ.

Three things that I have learnt from the Summer Learning Journey would be:
1. How Twenty Seven Names got its name.
2. The Dettifoss Waterfall in Iceland (When I was making my guide to Iceland).
3. MC Escher is a famous artist who makes symmetrical paintings/drawings.

Some things that could possibly change are:
1. More activities were you can create things like the Text Graphic
2. More activities where you go outside
3. I think it would be cool if there was a week about animals. Like famous animals or animals that changed the world.

Here is my text graphic that I made:
I chose this quote because I think it is very important and that people should listen to it. I think people shouldn't give up, even if it seems impossible. If you do it, then it's no longer impossible.

For this activity, I chose these two images:

Similarities: Both of these images our about animals and nature.
In both of the art works, the animals have also been done realistically and not in cartoon.

Differences: The top image contains more darker and duller colours while the bottom image is bright and colorful.
The top artwork is portrait while the bottom artwork has been done landscape.

How did the famous brand Twenty Seven Names get its name? Well, the brand was originally called Love Lies Bleeding. This was in 2006. However, they found out that their brand name was already a copyrighted brand name by a company in the US.
"We didn't have the capacity to get into an international legal battle and decided to re-name our brand".   Stewart said. So while they were thinking of a new name, they wrote down all of the names of people who had helped out to "get the label off the ground". When they counted out  how many names were on that list, there were 27. That's how they got their brand name, Twenty Seven Names.

I think that this a good brand name for them. I think that because, as well as a good brand name, it is a good way of remembering those who helped out this brand.

If I got the chance to do a 20 - 40 hour famine, I would do it. The reason I would do it is because then you know what people that don't have much food and are always very hungry feel like. This would help you understand what they are going through and then you could try to help them by sponsoring charities like world vision. Our family sponsors world vision. We sponsor a 12 year old girl called Djenabou who lives in Mali which is in Africa.

If I got to create my own movie, it would defiantley be about me and my pony, Casper. It would be about everything we have done together, the challenges we have done together and all of the funny things we have done. If I got to do this, there would be 2 parts of my movie, Part 1 and Part 2. Part 1 would be from my perspective and me telling the story. Part 2 would be from Caspers view and he would tell the story. The name of my story would be something like Casper and I. The main character would be Casper. Casper would be the star of the Show.

When I'm older, I want to be a famous Horse Rider. I would like to compete around the world at some of the most famous events like Badminton Horse Trials, Kentucky Rolex and Burghley. I would either like to do Eventing which is Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping or just a famous Show Jumper. Before I do this I think it would be cool to work at lots of different stables everywhere. This would be good because then you can learn lots of different things, tips and tricks.

The person that I find a Role Model is my horse riding Instructor who is also my ponies farrier, Eve Hawes. I find Eve a role model because she is a really good rider who knows LOTS about horses, like how they feel and why they are feeling that. She competes all around New Zealand, including the North Island! She also jumps really high.

SLJ Week 4 Day 1 Activity 3

Dear Diary,
Today was the final day of Abel Tasman. Abel Tasman is a big South Island Pony Club teams Jumping event. Casper and I were jumping 65 cm. For our jigsaw round, we were with Tara and Cricket, her pony. We ended up coming 4th overall, which is amazing because Abel Tasman was very big. Casper was pretty amazed two, when we did our lap of honour with Tara and Cricket, Casper was very happy showing of his green ribbon to everyone we went by. We had one refusal at an oxer in Gabblers Stakes, but that's OK because coming 4th overall with Casper made up for it.

Someone I know who faced a big challenge and overcame it was was my pony, Casper. On Eves pony camp, last year and this year, we went swimming with our ponies down at the river. Casper was not a big fan of swimming, but with some encouragement, he finally went in and swam. After that, I let him roll 4 times in the sand as a reward. Casper loved going swimming!

For this activity I chose the first picture:

Image Attribution: Day and Night, 1938, by MC Escher. Images courtesy of Collection Gemeentemuseum Den Haag/the MC Escher Company.

When I look at this picture, I see half of the picture as day, the other half as night. On the day side, (left) black geese/ducks are flying, which is just like the right side (night) except it's opposite colours. The paddocks below the birds are slowly transforming into the birds. This image is symmetrical.

If I got to make my own youtube channel, it would be about me and my pony. I would post videos of my riding, how I care for Casper, (my pony) and how to's for Equine stuff. This would also be a good way for us to see how much we have progressed in the last few weeks, months and years.
When I watch youtube, my favourite youtuber is 'This Esme'. She does riding and also has a pony called Casper!

For this activity I chose my horse riding Instructor who is also my farrier, Eve Hawes. Eve is a really good rider who knows a lot about horses. She owns her own horses and also trains horses. Eve competes around the country at shows and eventing. Her piece of advice is:
"Practice makes you successful. It takes you 10,00 hours of practise to become great at anything... so if you ride one horse for an hour a day it will take you 27 years and 144 days to be great at it. The more you practise the faster you'll get there."

Week Two Day One Activity One

Week Two Day One Activity One

1. My favourite thing to do is Horse Riding. I love riding my pony Casper, who is a grey Welsh Pony that is 12 years old. We both love jumping and we jump around 75 - 80 cm and have done a Pony Club teams jumping event in Motueka.

2. My next favourite thing to do is Reading. I like Adventure, fantasy animals and especially Animals. My favourite books are Horse books by Stacy Gregg. My 5 favourite books are The Diamond Horse, the Girl who Rode the Wind, Thunderbolt Pony, The Fire Stallion and The Princess and the Foal.

3. Next is spending time with our pets. We have a Black Labrador dog called Belle, a blue russian cat called Cufur, a Standardbred horse called Sammy and of course my pony Casper. Belle loves tummy rubs and going for runs around the farm. Cufur loves to follow me everywhere and cheer me up when I'm sad. Sammy Loves getting his face rubbed, especially around the eyes and being brushed. Casper loves jumping and eating.

4. One of the things that our family and neighbors do a lot is going to lake brunner with our boats. Going to the lake is lot's of fun, the things we do their include swimming, paddle-boarding/kayaking, water skiing, wake boarding and biscuiting.

5. Since we live on a dairy farm, my sister and I help out on the farm a lot. We milk 350 cows on our dairy farm.

SLJ Week One Day 5 Activity One

SLJ Week One Day 5 Activity One

Here are 3 of my most treasured things:

3. One of the things that I treasure is a blanket that I use to go to sleep with when I was a baby. Although I don't use it now, I still have it.

2. Something that is very important to me is a picture that I got for my birthday when I was turning 10. It is of me and my very first pony laying down. He was a chestnut Shetland Pony gelding. We first got him when he was 19 years old and sold him when he was 22. He is still with the people we sold him to having a great time.

1. What I treasure most is my grey Welsh pony, Casper. He is 13.2 hh (hands high) and 12 years old. He is super cute and super mischievous, he even performs tricks! I ride him around the farm, at pony club and shows. Our favourite thing to do is jumping and are currently jumping at 75 - 80 cm. I trust him a lot and together we can do lots of tricks and really cool things. I love my pony, Casper.
