SLJ Towering Timbers

Week: 1
Day: 5
Activity: 1

I am not quite against logging, but not quite with it either so I think I am in the middle. Here are some reasons why I am against it, and with it.

Why I am against it:
1. Birds and a few other bush animals start to live there while the trees grow but of course get pushed out of there home when the trees get logged.
2. The diggers and other vehicles that they use will sometimes make lots of smoke that goes into the air.

Why I am with it:
1. The trees cut down are good for making tables, chairs and so on.
2. It makes good money for NZ.

  1. Hi Jessica,

These are some really great reasons for and against logging - I can understand that it is tricky to pick one side when you can see pro's and con's for both!

I like that you have considered the wildlife in the area and what impact that may have on them and their habitat - wouldn't be so nice having your home chopped down aye?
I think it is very clever of you to think about the effect logging could have on the air too. Climate change and pollution are really big concerns for the world at the moment. Have you talked much about climate change in school?

You are right, we do make a lot of things from wood - do you think we could use/find other materials instead that might not have the same impact?

Logging doesn supply New Zealand with money and jobs, very good point - Maybe there is a new industry we could create that would give the loggers new jobs and still create money for New Zealand? Any ideas?

Really great thinking Jessica, I think you have given each side a fair assessment - Keep up the great work!

    Ellee :)

    1. Hello Ellee,

Yes, I do think we could find other materials to use instead of wood. Maybe for houses Brick?

      Jess :)
